In one of my favorite movies of all time, I recall Denzel Washington proclaiming “this is Chess not Checkers!” No, he wasn’t talking about football, but he was correct. Just like “Money Ball” revolutionized the game of professional baseball, coaches like Oregon’s Chip Kelly and high school coach Kevin Kelley of Little Rock have the ability to revolutionize the NFL. Their seemingly unorthodox methods consistently translate into wins. Why? Because they know the math of the game, they embrace concepts like Loss Aversion when roaming the sidelines and barking orders. I personally believe in what these guys do. Football is ever evolving, yet for whatever reason in a league of copycats, no one is copying these new concepts.
These two coaches “get it.” Not to say that other coaches out there aren’t good coaches, but they certainly are much more conservative than these two. NFL coaches have to be the most conservative creatures on the planet!
Numerous articles have been written about these new concepts in football, but I found this one, entitled “How Oregon Coach Chip Kelly Can Spark ‘Moneyball’ Revolution In NFL” written by Tim Livingston very compelling. Check it out, heck forward it to an NFL or college coach or two if you know any.
Ahead of the 4pm EST league trade deadline on Thursday, the Patriots made a move to secure suspended Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib. In addition to Talib, the Patriots will get a 2013 seventh-round draft pick and send a 2013 fourth-rounder to the Bucs.
Talib is currently serving a 4 game suspension handed down by the NFL, for his violation of the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. Talib admitted to taking an Adderall pill, “around the beginning of training camp” for which he did not have a prescription. He later apologized to his teammates and coaches for the “regrettable” incident.
At 6’1” tall , 205 pounds, Talib brings size and coverage skills to the Patriot’s corner position. He has recorded 18 interceptions in his 5 year NFL career.
Picking up Talib is a low risk proposition for the Pats considering he is in the final year of his current contract and they will only be on the hook for $1.825 million of his remaining salary. The potential upside is that he can help improve a pass defense that’s ranked 30th in the NFL in yards allowed.

There are two things that matter about the Dallas Cowboys’ 34-18 home, Monday Night Football loss to the Chicago Bears:
No doubt to those who play fantasy football you understand that #2 is actually the most important. At the start of this fantasy season I thought maybe, just maybe Romo was going to snap out of it and actually start to produce. I could care less if the Cowboys actually win, I just want him to give me my fantasy stats! I have experienced in the past the wrath of Romo ( typically replace the ‘R’ in his name with the 8th letter of the alphabet). Against my better judgment, this year I drafted him again. BAD MOVE! Romo’s 5 INT’s was the difference in my team being 2-2 and ranked #7 in the 12 team league and now being 1-3 and ranked 11th. Terrible, just terrible!! Following INT number 4 I was actually still in it for the win. The only thing that could keep me from winning was if he threw another one and there was NO WAY he would throw another one, until he did! This year Romo is not on my league’s “can’t cut” list and for that reason I wanted more than anything to cut his ass right then, but I didn’t.
Now, to speak to the thing that matters second most but is listed as number one on the list above, Romo actually threw 5 interceptions. What NFL quarterback does that in one game? I’m not a Cowboys fan, but I know plenty of people who are and I have a message for them. There is no way the Cowboys will make it back to, let alone win the Super Bowl as long as Tony Romo is the quarterback. That my friends is a fact. I’m sure many of you will explain away Romo’s failures (like you always do) by saying his receivers didn’t help him out and caused some of the interceptions. My response to that is if you continue to have to make excuses for his failures then at some point you must realize he’s a failure; and he is just that.
It remains to be known what will happen to Romo the remainder of this season both on the field and on my fantasy team.
